Torres wins it for Spain

Fernando Torres scored a magnificent winner as Spain were deservedly crowned champions of Europe after dominating a one-sided final against Germany in Vienna.

The Anfield hitman was lethal throughout an entertaining clash with Joachim Low’s side and netted the only goal of the game on 33 minutes to once again ensure that he is the toast of Madrid.

The Spanish striker broke the deadlock with a the type of goal Liverpool fans grew so accustomed to seeing him score at Anfield last season, when he outpaced Philipp Lahm to race onto Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas’ through ball and clip a sumptuous effort over the advancing now-Stuttgart keeper Jens Lehmann.

It was his second goal of the tournament and little more than he deserved after seeing an earlier header crash back off the woodwork.

Despite going close on numerous occasions in the second period, a good night’s work came to an end for him on 78 minutes when he was replaced by Daniel Guiza as Spain played out the rest of the match.

One Liverpool player who was on the field of play as the full-time whistle blew was Xabi Alonso, who had a calming influence on his teammates after replacing Fabregas on 64 minutes.

But there was no final appearance for Reds duo Alvaro Arbeloa and Pepe Reina who were once again unused substitutes.
