Reds manager Rafa Benitez almost quit last week due to frustration in the transfer market, according to Guillem Balague.
Guillem Balague sources said that Rafa was about to resign last week due to a row with the American owners over funding the Barry deal and the absence of a left-winger. He only stayed due to his respect for Liverpool, the fans and the staff who work with him everyday.
One of Rafa’s close friends said: “Rafa doesn’t care about what he is getting paid, he thought he was being undermined this summer and was close to giving up.”
Rafa had made it clear at the beginning that he wants Gareth Barry to be his main priority- but this couldn’t happen due to Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s unwillingness to pay the money.
“Since I started talking with Martin O’Neill in April, I didn’t talk with Aston Villa. All of the talks have been between Rick Parry and the owner, and chief executive, of Aston Villa, and both of them have been pretty good… I was not doing the talks about Barry, I was not doing the talks about Alonso, so if someone wants to talk about these players, then they have to talk with the chief executive of our club. If you want to talk about football, talk with me,” Rafa said, recently.]
