Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow revealed their will be a ‘short-term delay’ however according to reports, the stadium may not be built before 2018.
“Construction on the stadium will begin when the current contraction in the banking industry ends and the global financial markets re-establish their equilibrium,” Purslow said.
“The centrepiece is to deliver a world-class football ground that everyone can be proud of, a new home for the club with a stadium of at least 60,000 seats, giving the best possible match experience.”
Reds owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are set to receive $500m after selling the Texas Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens however, it doesn’t look likely that the pair would be leaving Anfield any sooner.
The duo promised Liverpool fans when they arrived in 2007 that the new stadium, Stanley Park, should be built in time for the 2011-12 season.
