The Liverpool hitman was once again at the top of his game as he scored the opening goal in Holland’s 4-1 victory against World Cup finalists France.
The Reds striker turned winger retained his place in the starting eleven after impressing many in the Group C opener against Italy, got the Dutch off to the brilliant start on nine minutes when he rose well to out muscle Chelsea’s Florent Malouda to bullet home Gio Van Bronckhorst’s right-wing corner beyond French ‘keeper Gregory Coupet.
The score remained the same through to the interval as France held out well. A few minutes into the second half, Dirk Kuyt was replaced by Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie on 55 minutes, Holland continued to look lethal and threatening with the Arsenal man doubling their advantage within four minutes of taking to the field.
France responded well with Thierry Henry who reduced the margin with a cool finish on 71 minutes before Netherlands restored their two goal cushion courtesy of substitute Arjen Robben’s magnificent individual effort less than 30 seconds later.
Wesley Sneijder made it 4-1 with a superb goal, to put the icing on the cake for the Oranje. Netherlands will next play Romania in group C.
