Gerrard seals last-gasp victory

August 23, 2008

Local lads Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher scored for Liverpool as they claimed a last-gasp victory against Middlesbrough at Anfield.

Liverpool were behind 1-0 with five minutes remaining after Mido put Middlesbrough ahead on the 70th minute.

But Gerrard’s curling shot from the edge of the penalty box won it after Jamie Carragher scored a deflected goal, cancelling out Mido’s opener.

The game marked Robbie Keane’s Anfield debut in which he showed glimpses of brilliance.

Dirk Kuyt brought a great save out of Ross Turnbull from 25 yards for Liverpool’s first shot at goal.

Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard came up with shots of their own, only for them to go wide.

Middlesbrough held out till half-time and then shocked thousands of Liverpool fans when Mido fired a stunning 25 yard strike into the bottom corner to leave Reina with no chance.

Just when Boro were on the verge of victory, Carragher scored from a 25-yard effort that took a deflection off Emanuel Pogatetz.

There were three minutes added on but a couple of injuries extended the three minutes to four. Gerrard then capitalized on a loose ball by Robbie Keane to curl home a brilliant winner and send the Kop home singing Steven Gerrard’s name.
