English duo close to Liverpool move

Liverpool are close to signing both Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry and Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing, according to latest reports.
Barry is the closest of the pair to sign for the Reds with a fee of £9million, potentially rising to £12m with add-ons already agreed.
The England international will be in Liverpool to finalize personal terms within the next two weeks.
Liverpool are also currently in advanced talks with Middlesbrough over Stewart Downing with a fee set to be agreed.
Downing is keen on joining the Reds and will be allowed to move in the summer if Boro get relegated to the Championship.

Downing may be a good buy. Can be cheap if Boro goes down. He’s a raw talent and Rafa might just polish him up. Southgate is no Rafa; that’s why most of us don’t really see the potential in this kid.
As for Barry, Rafa has been targeting him all season long. Might have plans for him. Just hope that doesn’t mean sidelining Xabi; our BEST player this season!
all lies, why would be buy two people who can basically play in the same position (left wing) when we have like 3 people who play there already. i know barry would be a good buy cus he is versatile, but WHY, WHY DOWNING? also we should invest in mark noble, that kid is class, we can steal him for 5 mil probably.
9m for barry? I doubt he will be that cheap seeing as O’neil wanted more than 18m for him last term!

i really hope xabi stays AND plays in liverpool. NO way barry can be any better than alonso. and get mascherano out of the squad because of barry? Well i think Rafa is playing it smart. The 6+5 ruling will go through sometime soon, and Rafa is preparing for it by going after more english players. It wouldnt suprise me if Riera left this summer for Downing just to fill that quota for english players.

barry will be useful incase alonso or masch get injured
honestly, Barry is a good player who can play everywhere from wing back until midfield. i think rafa is right to get Barry if the p[rice is not expensive. of course Xabi still can play even with Barry. if you guy remember when Gerrard get injured or Xabi then our team will drop quite a lot. we need him really,as the total game in the year is a big number. additionally, he is very strong, can score goal, and can deliver a reliable passing, importantly, very consistent. so i support Rafa to get him.
But in case of Downing, i am not so convinced as i do not think he is a smart player and not so outstanding this day. his pace is good but not as good as we need. we need such top player such as Riberi from bayern, rob ben from madrid, inesta from barca, silva from valencia, or valencia from wigan. so many choices. let’s hope we really get the top players. i also support to sell out those unqualified in order to have enough budget.
i’m ok with Barry. He’s quality player, he is strong, he can pass the ball, he can score, he can play in a number of different positions, and he’s a good friend of Gerrard. And he will not cost as much, i think 9m is ok.

As for Downing, he’s English and Coach wants to provide more competition for Riera. I agree only if we sell Babel, who is not comfortable at LFC, Lucas, and Dossena. We can have Riera as first option, who this year was conscistent only for 50 min. or Barry on the Left.

Barry would be a great signing since he’s very versatile and can be backup for both xabi and masch… He might even become better than them with proper training and adaptation. However for downing, its a complete waste, we need a true winger with skills like dribbling, speed, vision and crossing. Lennon is too xpensive so i think zarate could be a gud signing cuz with proper training he is likely to be the nxt messi!!!

I like the fact tht we’re signing both of them. Barry would be a brilliant left flanker and could shift to the left back or cover for any1 injured in midfield. He’s also had a pretty good season with villa.
As for downing, I think he could be a class act for the club. He is an idol at boro. And in my opinion, u guys have to admit, he’s also played very well for boro. I think with dalglish back in the frame at anfield, King kenny could really POLISH him up. He could be a very good player for the club. Hope we can get them both. YNWA

besides, barry is more likely to boost the team up rather than (perhaps) lucas.. but i dont like the idea that he will stay at the bench for gerrard or xabi replacement, its not worth for the money we spend

We don’t need these, lucas is better than both of them and we have plenty of player who can play that position, plessis is better than these!
Both Barry and Downing are good players, but to be fair we only need Barry there. We have Dossena and Insua at LB, so why not play Aurelio LM where I think he plays better. I also think Lennon would be a mistake because he isn’t very good. Yes he’s rapid but thats it. He can hardly cross, he can’t shoot and he isn’t too good a passer. All we need now is a good defender to replace Hyypia, hopefully Albiol, someone to be 2nd to Kuyt, probably that Kuba Blaszczykowski and a better 2nd choice over N’Gog which will probably be Negredo, even if Madrid buy him back. Here’s the transfers I reckon (or already done):
IN – Albiol, Downing, Barry, Negredo, Kuba
OUT – Lucas, Babel, Hyypia, Pennant, Voronin, Degen
